The next big step in battery tech is here??

If you’ve been anywhere near the electric motorcycle world over the last few years, you’ll know that battery technology is the limiting factor. Power, range, charging time, longevity — everything ultimately comes back to what’s sitting inside the bike.

So when Donut Lab announced its solid-state battery technology, and confirmed it would be going into production motorcycles from Verge, it was always going to turn heads.

The question is: is this genuinely the next big step, or just another promising concept?

Let’s break it down.

What is Donut Lab’s solid-state battery — and why does it matter?

Traditional lithium-ion batteries (the kind used in most electric motorcycles today) rely on liquid electrolytes. They work well, but they come with compromises: heat management, degradation over time, and physical packaging constraints.

Solid-state batteries replace that liquid electrolyte with a solid material. In theory, that brings some major advantages:

Higher energy density (more range for the same weight)

Improved thermal stability

Reduced fire risk

Potentially faster charging

Longer service life

In short: lighter, safer, longer-lasting batteries — exactly what electric motorbikes need to move beyond early adoption.

The reality, until now, has been that solid-state tech struggled to scale and survive real-world abuse. That’s where Donut Lab’s approach becomes interesting.

Why Verge is the perfect testbed.

Verge is already known for doing things differently. Their hubless rear wheel design removes conventional drivetrain components and allows a totally different approach to packaging weight and power delivery.

By integrating Donut Lab’s battery tech into their platform, Verge isn’t just swapping one battery for another — they’re redesigning the motorcycle around it.

From a technical perspective, that matters. Battery tech only delivers its full benefit when the bike is designed to exploit it properly.

This is very different from retrofitting new cells into an old architecture.

How this compares to current electric motorcycles

Right now, most production electric motorcycles fall into three broad camps:

Zero Motorcycles

Zero has arguably done more than anyone to normalise the electric motorbike. Their bikes are reliable, usable, and supported by a strong dealer network. Current battery tech is mature, predictable, and proven — but not revolutionary.

Energica

Energica pushed hard on performance and fast-charging, particularly with CCS capability. They’ve shown what’s possible with existing lithium-ion tech, but at the cost of weight and complexity.

Stark Future

Stark approached the problem from the opposite direction: off-road, high power, minimal compromise. Their success shows how far current battery tech can be pushed — but also how application-specific those solutions are.

What Verge and Donut Lab are aiming for is something else entirely: a step change, not an optimisation.

What this means for riders (and buyers)

If solid-state batteries deliver even most of what’s promised, the knock-on effects could be huge:

Longer real-world range without adding weight

Less long-term battery degradation

Improved resale value for used electric motorcycles

More consistent performance in hot or cold conditions

From our perspective as a retailer and service centre, that also has implications for electric motorcycle servicing and parts. Fewer thermal issues, improved longevity, and better diagnostics could fundamentally change ownership costs over time.

That’s a good thing — provided the technology proves itself.

Healthy scepticism is still warranted

We’ve been around long enough to see plenty of “next big things” arrive early, under-deliver, or quietly disappear.

Solid-state batteries are not new as a concept. What is new is a credible plan to put them into real production motorcycles that people can actually buy, ride, service, and live with.

Until bikes are on the road — covering miles, charging daily, being serviced, and eventually entering the used electric motorcycle market — caution is sensible.

Excitement is fine. Blind belief isn’t.

So… is this the next big step?

Potentially — yes.

If Donut Lab’s battery tech performs as claimed, and Verge delivers it in a reliable, serviceable production bike, this could mark one of the most meaningful advances in electric motorcycle design we’ve seen so far.

Whether it becomes the standard will depend on how quickly the wider industry can adopt and scale similar technology — and how well it stands up outside the press releases.

Either way, it’s a development worth watching closely.

Where we fit into all this

At English Electric Motor Co., we deal with electric motorcycles every day — from new and used electric motorcycles, to servicing, diagnostics, and electric motorcycle parts, including Zero Motorcycles parts.

Our job isn’t to chase hype. It’s to understand what’s coming, what actually works, and what makes sense for riders in the real world.

Battery technology is moving fast. We’ll be watching this space closely — spanners, diagnostics, and common sense firmly in hand.
